We
have 8 parrots that are very social and well kept. They are well-adjusted
birds that interact with guest, employees and other birds all day
long. Parrots are very intelligent. At our Avery area we have Red
lored parrots, White crowned and White front parrots.
Red-lored
Parrots are gregarious, meaning that they live in flocks. These
birds are often noisy, unless resting or eating. Their call is screechy
and loud. These highly intelligent parrots will use their beaks
to test new surfaces, climb, and husk seeds. The Red Lored is one
of the most colorful of all Amazons. The forehead is bright red,
the crown pale lilac and cheeks bright yellow. Young Red Loreds
show less color than adults as the color increases with age.
Red
loreds make sweet, loving companions. They are often likely to become
entirely devoted to one member of the family, whom they will jealously
guard from all other family members. They have an Amazon s average
talking ability of about 12 words, but often begin learning to speak
earlier than most.
The
White Front is the smallest of the available parrot species and
is sometimes confused with the White Capped Pionus. The White Front
is the most affordable parrot, being less expensive as well as having
more modest caging requirements than other parrots. The White Front
has a white forehead with blue crown and red around the eyes. The
beak is yellow. A male has red on his wing feathers and the females
are green in the same specific area, making them easily distinguished.
The
White Front can talk, but is not a gifted talker, usually learning
just a few words. This is a more quiet parrot which fits well into
apartment living.
The
White-crowned Pionus, also know as the White-capped Pionus or White-capped
Parrot, is a popular pet and relatively common in captivity. They
are a pleasure to the resort. Once they are well-known they become
a very passive parrot that is calm and cushy. They are very sweet
and affectionate. These intelligent and curious little birds do
have a somewhat stronger personality than most other Pionus species,
but with good attention they can make fabulous family pets! They
are quick to learn and can be taught a variety of tricks
