The
Belize Zoo is 30 minutes drive from the hotel and will only
take you approximately an hour to tour the entire zoo. A visit to
the Belize Zoo is the best way to get to know to the animals of
Belize, and to understand why it is important to protect the habitats
that sustain them. Here you will see the animals in their own habitat.
Being the only Zoo in the country and consisting of 9 acres of tropical
savanna, it exhibits over 125 animals all native to Belize. The
zoo keeps animals which were orphaned, born at the zoo, or rehabilitated
animals.

The
Belize Zoo has the 5 different species of wildcat which live deep
within the rainforests of the Maya Mountains. These include the
Jaguar, Margay, Ocelot, Jaguarondi and the Puma. It has a well-built
collection of bird species, starting from parrots and macaws, up
to vultures and hawks, and wading birds. It also includes the endangered
Jabiru Stork. Furthermore, it also exhibits a few of the more common
snakes of Belize including the most dangerous one, which is the
Fer- de -lance. Most of the poisonous snakes tend to be secretive
and nocturnal. Therefore, if you want to see these snakes, the best place is in the Belize zoo.
