The
Mary Blondell Memorial Butterfly Feeding Center isnamed after Mrs.
Mary Blondel. It was created to raise awarness of the
environment for locals and visitors. It provides a wide-ranging
introduction to the natural history and topography of Belize and
is located a 3 minute walk away from the main buildling.
Our
guests receive a 30 minute guided tour inside an enclosed tropical
garden that has many beautiful butterflies fluttering around flowers.
Our trained knowledgeable guides explain about the life cycle and
natural history of these fascinating creatures. How they interact
on the life cycles of forest life, and the fragility of their ecosystems.
Guides may identify the most beautiful butterflies we have here
in Belize, point out the females ovi-positing their eggs on host
plants and feeding on flowers. Visitors are lead through displays
of butterflies, moths, and insects. Visitors may touch the legs
of butterflies and discover how they hold on to plants or try to
find the lottery number on their wings. Topics such as the role of butterflies in nature, their
defense mechanisms and those of their host plants are just a few
of the many topics are discussed.
Mainly
in the early morning is when the tours are better, because that
is when the butterflies are emerging from their chrysalides. At
this time visitors are able to follow the life cycle from egg to
pupa of a large, beautiful shimmering blue butterfly called the
Blue Morpho.
